How to Best Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a critical element in the proper protection of your skin. It only works, however, when it is properly applied. Applying sunscreen is easy but you must take care to cover every part of your body that is exposed to the sun. This guide takes you through the process step by step.

  1. First: Timing is important

Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go outside. Your skin has to have time to absorb the lotion if it is effective. Also, do not forget to touch up your sunscreen frequently during the day.

  2. Second: Getting to the easy parts

First, apply the lotion to your face and neck area. Spread the lotion on evenly and massage it in. Liberally cover your ears and all areas of your face and neck. When applying sunscreen to your head area, work the sunscreen all the way up to and actually into the edge of the hairline. It is common for people to get sunburned in those areas. Next, apply the sunscreen to your arms, legs, chest and the other parts of your body that you can easily reach. Do not forget the backs of your hands and the bottoms of your feet. Also, reach under the edges of your clothing to make sure you are protected in case your clothing shifts during the day.

  3. Third: Getting a friend to help

The last step in applying sunscreen is asking for the help of a friend to get to those hard to reach places on your body. Have them apply liberal amounts and massage it in well. Make sure you return the favor and ensure that your friend is well protected from the potentially harmful rays of the sun as well!
