UVR and Sun Protection

Skin cancer is a growing problem, so it is important to fully understand its causes and how to prevent it. There are many factors which contribute to skin cancer; however, the most understandable and preventable aspect of skin cancer is that of ultraviolet rays, commonly referred to as UVR.

Ultraviolet rays

Visible light is the most noticeable form of light, but most wavelengths of light are not visible. UVR is an example of such light, and the three types of UVR are UVA, UVB and UVC. Only UVA and UVB penetrate the atmosphere; both of them can cause skin cancer.

When excessive UVR strikes skin cells, it fundamentally alters the DNA of the cell. As the damaged cell replicates, it forms cancerous lesions and tumors. These cancerous cells are quite dangerous because they can spread quickly.

Protect against UVR

The natural recommendation for those who want to protect themselves from UVR is to avoid exposure to the sun. This certainly helps, but it is not enough. UVR can strike in shaded areas, as well. UVR exposure is the greatest during the middle of the day, so staying indoors during those times is important. Another obvious choice for avoiding UVR is to stop using tanning beds; all of them emit UVA rays. Special clothes and glasses are available that protect against UVR; these are generally labeled with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF for short, which indicates the level of protection provided. These same standards are applied to sunscreen lotions and spray, which are the best way to prevent skin cancer.

UVR is a dangerous byproduct of a beautiful day, and it is important to protect oneself against it. These basic avoidance techniques are powerful weapons in the fight against UVR and skin cancer.
